The actor joked that one movie scene may have actually counted as a wedding, well, at least in the eye of God
Keanu Reeves Admits He's Been Married To Winona Ryder For Nearly 30 Years
Keanu Reeves has shared an intriguing possibility that he might have been married to Winona Ryder for about 30 years without really knowing it.
The star of "The Matrix" and "John Wick" revealed that he and Ryder might have accidentally gotten married, at least in a spiritual sense.
You might think it’s pretty obvious when you’re married to someone, but in this case, there’s a pretty unique explanation for why Reeves might not have realized his marital status with Ryder.
Actors often go to great lengths for their roles, whether it involves working with dialect coaches, altering their weight, picking up new skills, or even some of the more extreme methods of method acting.
However, getting married takes commitment to a role to a whole new level.
So, how did these two end up possibly married without realizing it for three decades?
It all stems from a scene in a movie from the 90s in which they both acted.
If you're a fan of drama, loud outbursts, bizarre Victorian pseudo-science, and Gary Oldman sporting long curly hair, then you'll want to check out Francis Ford Coppola's 1992 film "Bram Stoker's Dracula."
This film, while not without its flaws, is a grand adaptation of the classic vampire tale, featuring Gary Oldman as the infamous Dracula and Anthony Hopkins as his arch-enemy Van Helsing.
In the movie, Keanu Reeves portrays the unlucky Jonathon Harker, an estate agent who ventures to Dracula’s castle in the Carpathian Mountains to help him buy a property in London.
Winona Ryder plays Mina Murray, Jonathan's fiancée, who becomes his wife in the storyline after Jonathan escapes from Dracula's castle and recuperates in a nunnery.
Their wedding scene in the movie was quite authentic, performed by a real Orthodox priest.
Discussing the event with Esquire, Reeves mentioned, “We did a whole take of a marriage ceremony with real priests. Winona says we are. Coppola says we are. So, I guess we’re married under the eyes of God.”
You might assume they just performed the necessary parts for the film, but Ryder offered more insight in an interview with Entertainment Weekly while they were promoting their film "Destination Wedding."
She remarked, “We actually got married in Dracula. No, I swear to god I think we’re married in real life. In that scene, Francis used a real Romanian priest. We shot the master and he did the whole thing. So, I think we’re married.”
Well, it seems we should extend congratulations to the happy couple on their pearl wedding anniversary!
