One Reddit user has shared their 'scary' experience with the iPhone feature.
iPhone users conflicted on new feature that's 'terrifying' but could save your life
Apple has introduced a new iPhone feature that could potentially save lives, though it has sparked mixed feelings among users.
Smartphones come packed with useful features that simplify daily activities, but Apple's new feature takes on a crucial role.
Introduced in 2022, the 'Crash Detection' feature is designed to help those involved in serious accidents by automatically calling for assistance.
This feature is available on the iPhone 14 and newer models, as well as the Apple Watch Series 8 and later, the second-generation Apple Watch SE, and the Apple Watch Ultra.
According to the Apple website: "If your iPhone or Apple Watch detects a severe car crash, your device can help connect you to emergency services. Emergency calls use a mobile data connection or Wi-Fi Calling with an internet connection from your Apple Watch or iPhone."
Additionally, if you've set up an emergency contact in the feature's settings, your device will send them a message with your location, informing them that you've been in an accident.
One woman recounted on Reddit how the Crash Detection feature alerted her after her sister was involved in a car crash.
She posted a screenshot of the alarming message, which stated: "Crash Detected SOS. I called emergency services from this approximate location after iPhone detected a crash. You are receiving this message because I have listed you as an emergency contact."
The message made her anxious, especially when she tried calling her sister and got no response.
"Fortunately, her husband called me back shortly after and informed me that she was okay," she added.
Her sister sustained a few broken ribs from the accident. Yet, this feature has caused unease among other Reddit users.
One user commented: "I would freak out if I got this – my sister is my best friend."
Another expressed: "That message must have been TERRIFYING to receive. Glad she's OK. Hope you are too."
Others have shared how Crash Detection potentially saved their lives.
One person explained: "This happened to my brother, he got into a bad accident which left him unconscious so he wasn't able to dial emergency services, the phone automatically called them and notified me, I didn't even know about this feature at the time."
Another recounted: "Got rear-ended by a garbage truck this past summer, totaled my car and phone went flying on impact. Passengers were knocked out cold. My watch automatically called 911 and I was able to get help. It's a feature you hope you never have to use but sure as hell glad it's there when you need it."
