Mystery Surrounds Full-Sized Two-story House Floating In San Francisco Bay

Earlier this month, when the solar eclipse occurred, countless people were captivated, gazing upward at the spectacle in the sky.

Interestingly, Google searches for 'why do my eyes hurt' saw a significant spike following the event, indicating that perhaps too many had stared a bit too long.

While the eclipse was undoubtedly the main attraction, there was another mystery unfolding simultaneously that has left people curious.

On April 8, a two-story house was spotted floating on the San Francisco Bay and reportedly remained there for at least three days.

As crowds gathered at San Francisco’s Exploratorium to view the solar eclipse, some attendees noticed something quite unusual out on the bay—a large wooden house sitting in the middle of the water.

This floating home was seen maneuvering around Alcatraz Island, aided by a slow-moving tow boat.

The boat then disappeared from view for a while but was eventually located by Nexstar’s KRON on the following Tuesday, April 16.

It is now anchored in Richardson Bay, north of San Francisco and just offshore from Sausalito.

Naturally, you might be wondering how a house managed to float on the water for several days.

US Coast Guard officials have provided some clarity, explaining that the house was able to stay afloat because it was mounted on a large barge.

The Coast Guard also confirmed that the house began its unusual journey somewhere south of San Francisco Bay.

While many details about this floating house remain a mystery, some information has recently come to light.

This particular boat was the last in a community of houseboats that had been evicted from Docktown at the Redwood City Marina.

The city had previously settled over $1 million in disputes, with this houseboat being the second to last one remaining at Docktown, as reported by SFGate.

Phil Hott, an expert on houseboats, shared with NBC Bay Area, "It was up a twisty channel, so you have to have the tide right and you have to come down without the wind blowing you into the bank. These things are very heavy. Then it has to travel through the Bay. And with the winds and the tide changes and the current going out, you don’t want it to drag you out to the Golden Gate Bridge."
